Boko Haram: US lawmakers visit Borno, assure Nigeria of technical support



United States Senator, Christopher Coons, has assured the Nigerian government of support of the American government in dealing with Boko Haram crises in northeast Nigeria.


Senator Coons who spoke to journalists in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital on Tuesday, said, there visit to Borno state was to experience the pulse of the ongoing Boko Haram crises and to partner with government in bringing the crises to an end.

The Senator, who spoke on behalf of a congressional delegation from the United States of America led by the US Ambassador to Nigeria to the Headquarters, Theatre Command. Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri, also commended the efforts of the Military Command and Control Centre on the achievements made in the ongoing operations.

He said, ” We have come to show our support to the Nigerian soldiers in the counter insurgency operation in the northeast Nigeria. We would increase our technical support to ensure that the crises ravaging the region is brought to an end.”

Also speaking during the visit, the Theatre Commander Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru, said that the visit of the US congregational delegation will go a long way to show how the United States is extending its hands in the counter insurgency operation in the northeast.

He observed that the US refused to sell of weapons to Nigeria in the past following lack of commitment on the part of the government in power at that time, but have shown interest now as a result of he zeal of the present government.

“This is to show you the extent that the US has gone in supporting the fight against insurgency in the northeast,” he said.
