Nigerian Man Arrested Alongside 2 Malawian Women for Drug Trafficking

The police in Malawi have announced the arrest of a 43-year-old Nigerian, identified as Christian Osingwelen, for drug trafficking.

According to reports, Osingwelen was arrested at the Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe alongside 2 Malawian women, 39-year-old Lusungu Mlenga and 33-year-old Nkhata Bayand Rita Juma, for illegal possession and importation of a dangerous drug called Ephedrin.
The police said the offence was contrary to section 11 (a) Regulation 19 of Dangerous Drug Act of Malawi.
Osingwelen’s arrest in Malawi comes barely two weeks after a massacre in a church in Ozubulu community in Anambra state said to have been in connection with an ongoing drug war involving Nigerians in another African country.
Airport Police Branch Public Relations Officer, Sapulain Chitonde Lee said the arrest was made following a tip-off from MRA Officers working in the arrivals hall that one of the ladies, Mlenga was at the airport to pick up a table used to conceal the drugs.
Police searched the table and found packets of unknown powder. They later broke one of the packets to examine the powder and discovered it was a dangerous drug called Ephedrin.
“We are yet to finalise interrogating the three to where the drugs were coming from and who owns it,” Chitonde said.
The Malawian police official who described Juma as Osingwelen’s girlfriend, said the lady received a call from Osingwelen’s friend to pick up the sum of $1000 in town and give it to him at the airport without telling her the purpose of the said money.
“The Nigerian while accepting the statements from his friends is, however, denying ownership of both the table and the drug, despite giving Mlenga all the money to clear the table at MRA,” said Chitonde.
According to The Nation, the Nigerian drug suspect and his accomplices were also accused of attempting to bribe airport officials in order to avoid being handed over to the police.
